He was first introduced to the medium by discovering a deserted hand press at Arsenal Technical High School in his hometown of Indianapolis. He received his formal art education at the Herron in Indianapolis, receiving his BFA degree in 1948. He was first introduced to the medium by discovering a deserted hand press at Arsenal Technical High School in his hometown of Indianapolis. He received his formal art education at the Herron in Indianapolis, receiving his BFA degree in 1948. He also studied printmaking with Will Barnet in New York at the Art Students League, and Stanley William Hayter at Atelier 17 in the late forties. During the 1950s, while working as an instructor at the Herron School of Art, he began to create color lithographs. He received his formal art education at the Herron in Indianapolis, receiving his BFA degree in 1948. He also studied printmaking with Will Barnet in New York at the Art Students League, and Stanley William Hayter at Atelier 17 in the late forties.
