His favorite subjects included cow ponies, quarter horses, racehorses, game, and wild fowl. Dick graduated from Wentworth Military Academy, and in 1939 earned a degree in forestry from the University of Michigan. After serving in World War Two, he studied at the University of New Mexico with Kenneth Adams and Randall Davey, and earned an MFA in 1950.
