He lasted a year before he decamped to Chicago, where he studied at the Art Institute for four years. He remained in Chicago after concluding his studies and practiced commercial art. He lasted a year before he decamped to Chicago, where he studied at the Art Institute for four years. He remained in Chicago after concluding his studies and practiced commercial art. Mock made an early trip to Brown County around 1910 and was surprised to find a relatively thriving artists colony there. He returned again ten years later at which point he made regular painting trips, often hanging out with his friend, photographer Frank Hohenberger. Mock was a frequent Hoosier Salon exhibitor.
