In 1933, at the age of 18, Phippen joined the Civilian Conservation Corps working first in Minnesota and then in Washington. Left the Corps in 1939 to return to Kansas for a year and then went back to Washington and California before settling in Tucson, AZ in 1940. During World War II, he wanted to be a combat artists for the Army, but was stationed at Fort Warden in Washington... Read full biography
