Following further study at the NAD, in 1837 he moved to Indiana which remained his home for the rest of his life. In 1874 he came to California to settle a relatives estate and remained for one year. While in San Francisco he established a studio and was active in the art world there during his brief stay. He left behind many paintings, most of which were lost in the earthquake and fire of 1906.
