During his studies from 1952 to 1958 at the University of Fine and Applied Arts in Berlin-Weißensee, he took lessons from Heinrich Drake and Theo Balden. Gerhard Rommel worked as a freelancer in Berlin since 1958. From 1963 to 1965 he was a master student of Fritz Cremer at the German Academy of the Arts.
