After serving in the South African Air Force during World War II, he traveled through Europe, studied in Florence, and eventually returned to South Africa. Vorster enrolled in fine arts at the University of the Witwatersrand in the late 1940s and became a member of the Wits Group. Transitioning from film to a full-time artist in 1963, Vorster's artwork reflects his love of nature, often depicting abstracted landscapes filled with bushveld wildlife.
