During the Revolution he was an officer in the Indonesian armed forces involved in intelligence work in South Sumatra. His war-time activities included making anti-Dutch propaganda posters and organizing dramatic performances to drum up nationalist fervor. Widayat was among the first batch of students at ASRI / Indonesian Academy of Fine Arts, Yogyakarta. He graduated from ASRI in 1954, and then became a teacher in the school and remained a staff member until he retired in 1988. He co-founded the artists group PIM / Young Indonesian Painters in 1952.
