Hans Herrmann (1858-1942) studied at the academies in Berlin and Dusseldorf. During this time he made his first journeys to Holland and Denmark. He returned to Berlin in 1885. He became a member of the Academy in Berlin in 1896. Together with Jacob Alberts, Ludwig von Hofmann, Walter Leistikow, Max Liebermann et al. he founded the progressive group Elf (resignation 1898).
