He was born in Alverstoke, Southampton, England and moved to Australia in 1881. He and his wife, Cecilia Rogers, were both art students in England when they married in 1874 at Sydenham, Kent. Their daughter, Cecilia May (1877-1969) was born in England, and she ultimately became a well-known painter and cartoonist like her father, who was her teacher and helped her from age twelve to get her cartoons published. Herbert Gibbs was the eldest of seven children and received his early education from his father, William Gibbs, a merchant and private tutor at Singleton, Sussex grammer school. At age...
