Herman Gustav Simon was born in Germany in 1846. The Simon family emigrated to the United States, settling in Philadelphia in 1848. Early in his life Herman Simon displayed an artistic talent. He entered the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and exhibited in the Annual Exhibition of 1863. He also exhibited several paintings at the Centennial Exhibition of 1876.
