His mother provided him with his first artistic training in Dusseldorf and continued to study abroad between 1886-87 at the school of Kristian Zahrtmann in Copenhagen. Jerichau subsequently led an unsettled, wandering life with stays in the Orient, in Italy, on Capri, in southern Russia, the Ukraine, in the Crimea, in Egypt and in India.
