He and his family relocated to Pennsylvania when he was ten years old. Poole lived in Philadelphia and studied at the local School of Industrial Design. He and his family relocated to Pennsylvania when he was ten years old. Poole lived in Philadelphia and studied at the local School of Industrial Design. He went on to attend classes at the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Art for six years as a pupil of Thomas Anshutz. In 1914, he moved to Hawaii where he was able to support himself working as a newspaper illustrator,"Pacific Commercial Advertiser".
