He also began a part time painting course at St Martin's School of Art, combining promising careers as both concert pianist and professional painter. He began exhibiting his work in London in 1956 and then met the artist Edward Seago, who saw great potential in Ian’s work and offered him encouragement as well as persuading Ian to concentrate on landscape painting.
