She studied with George Brandt Bridgman and Frank Vincent DuMond at the League, and with Herman Henry Wessel. After teaching in high schools in Dayton and Cincinnati, 1918-1920, Elder moved to Dallas in 1921, where she lived most of her life. She died in Dallas and was buried there.
