Jacobus Theodorus Abels was born in 1803 in Amsterdam and was a pupil of the animal painter Jan van Ravenzwaay (1789-1869). After his study trip to Germany in 1826 he moved to Hilversum, where a group of young artist had settled down to paint. Amongst them were Barend Cornelis Koekkoek (1803-1862) and Albertus Verhoesen (1806-1881) whom Abels befriended.
