Jacques Stephan Witjens was born in 1881 in The Hague, Netherlands, under the name Adrianus Hendrikus Witjens. Even though he was mostly self-taught, the befriended artist August Allebé helped him develop his own style. In 1901 he had his own studio. In 1912 he won the first price of the Concurso Bignelli and exhibited successfully in the subsequent time. This first phase was characterized by pastose paint application, reduced compositions and an earthy colour pallet. He immigrated to Argentina... Read full biography

Even though he was mostly self-taught, the befriended artist August Allebé helped him develop his own style. In 1901 he had his own studio. In 1912 he won the first price of the Concurso Bignelli and exhibited successfully in the subsequent time. This first phase was characterized by pastose paint application, reduced compositions and an earthy colour pallet. He immigrated to Argentina in 1920 where he began painting the Argentinian landscape and the people. He could never quite free himself of his dutch heritage and his paintings excel by their deep, intense skies. He later turned towards the palette knife technique. He exhibited... Read full biography
