A painter in both watercolor and oil, James Burrell Smith was born in the south of England but lived in the north, in Alnwick, Northumberland, from 1843 to 1854 and studied with the Newcastle master Thomas Miles Richardson, Sr. (1784-1848). In 1854 he moved to London, where he set up as a drawing master and built up an extensive teaching practice, concentrating on watercolor painting.
