James Rogers Lamantia was born in 1923. Lamantia graduated from the School of Architecture at Tulane University and Harvard University's Graduate School of Design. He received the Prix de Rome in 1948 and a Fulbright Fellow to Italy in 1949. For many years he taught art and architecture at Tulane where he was appointed a full professor in 1974.
