Simultaneously, he painted fresh realistic watercolors of the North Carolina coast. Cox was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, and received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the local John Herron Art Institute (now affiliated with Indiana University). He went on to receive his Master of Fine Arts from the University of Iowa in Iowa City.
