After graduating from grammar school Johann Georg Müller completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter, followed by a study of civil engineering. After a short time he quit civil engineering and took more courses with Albert Henselmann at the Free Academy Mannheim. Self-taught, he deals with the works of Wilhelm Leibl and Hans Holbein what he later called crucial to his development as an artist.
