Johann Pietersz Schoeff is thought to have been born and raised in Antwerp, but moved to The Hague in 1639. There he lived next to Jan van Goyen for a time, and like him was highly influenced by Salomon van Ruysdael and Lucas van Uden. Schoeff also created a number of works that H.-U. Beck describes as “own creations without predecessors”. These are mainly panoramic landscapes with rolling hills, punctuated by hedgerows.
