John L McIndoe was born in Dunedin in 1898. He studied art with Alfred O’Keefe before joining the family printing business. During the Second World War he enrolled with the 1st Echelon of the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force, serving in Eygypt, Libya and Greece. He was captured by German forces in Crete in May 1941, while serving as a Captain attached to the New Zealand Division Supply column. During the Second World War he enrolled with the 1st Echelon of the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force, serving in Eygypt, Libya and Greece. He was captured by German forces in Crete in May 1941, while serving as a Captain attached to the New Zealand Division Supply column. McIndoe spent the remaining four years of the war as a Prisoner of War in Germany. Following the war an exhbition of his artworks, completed while in a Prisoner of War camp, was held in London.
