In 1823, he entered the school after apprenticeships with George Clint and Henry Sass. He went on to specialize in portraiture, making his debut in 1824 with subsequent works being exhibited in 1828 at the British Institute. In 1836 and 1844, respectively, he was appointed Associate and Academician of the Royal Academy, followed by a Professorship from 1848-1873 in Perspective.
