John Robinson Tait was born in Cincinnati and went abroad in 1853 with his teacher, William Louis Sonntag. Tait was an active commentator on the cultural and social scene, writing travel and poetry books and art criticism for periodicals; he became known as a poet-artist or poet-painter. Tait studied in Dusseldorf for much of the middle and late 1860s, then settled in Baltimore in 1872; he was back in Germany, this time in Munich, from 1873 until 1876. Source:. William H.
