He was born Jacob Sheinfine in 1901 in the Ukraine and brought to Chelsea, Massachusetts by his family as an infant. His first language was Yiddish. He studied at Boston University and then moved to New York City in the 1920's where he worked as a graphic artist and type designer. His exhibits of painting and sculpture at the Arthur U. In middle age he studied print-making at The Art Students League and issued a series of lithographs and etchings based on his biblical paintings.
