After graduating from St Ignatius High School, he enrolled at the local School of Design and in 1888 furthered his art studies in Paris under Laurens and De Chavannes. After graduating from St Ignatius High School, he enrolled at the local School of Design and in 1888 furthered his art studies in Paris under Laurens and De Chavannes. After four years abroad, he returned to San Francisco and became chief administrator of the Midwinter Fair in 1894. His studio in the 600 block of Clay Street was presided over by an American Indian valet who dressed in tribal attire. Stanton taught at the School of Design for 26 years.
