He was a Lutheran minister in Madisonville, OH (1886-89), Portland, OR (1889-93), and Santa Rosa, CA (1894-1904). Theiss began painting in 1901 and remained a self-taught artist except for ten lessons with Lorenzo Latimer and criticism from Antony Anderson. He painted landscapes of the Sonoma Hills and Yosemite until 1904 when he moved to Los Angeles into a studio-home at 1308 E. 46th Street.
