Josef Foshko was born in Odessa, Russia in 1895. At the age of sixteen he finished his courses at the Imperial Art School with a scholarship to study in Paris. During his seven-year stay in France, he exhibited with the Societe des Artistes Francaise and with the Societe Nationale de Beaux Arts. His first one-man show in New York was held in 1935.
