Josef Kinzel studied at the Vienna Academy under Christian Griepenkerl, Carl Wurzinger, Eduard Engerth, Carl von Blaas, and August Eisenmenger. He then studied in Munich with Alois Gabl and Otto Seitz, where he specialized in genre painting. In the early 1880's he returned to Vienna, and joined the Artists House. Josef Kinzel is considered one of the last representatives of the Viennese genre painting.
