Born in New York City in 1833, J.F. Pages moved to San Francisco, California in 1857. He stayed in San Francisco and started an engraving business, and also attended the California School of Design. He was closely associated with Northern California Impressionists and his style was more French influenced than his California contemporaries and often included Parisian and Oriental subjects.
