Kang Cho was born in Seoul, Korea in 1953. Cho's childhood provided a strong foundation for his fine-art career. He and his older brother routinely wandered the fields near his home, painting what he saw. He came to the United States from Korea in 1969 when he was a sophomore in high school. In 1973 upon graduation Cho received a full two-year scholarship to the American Academy of Art in Chicago. He and his older brother routinely wandered the fields near his home, painting what he saw. He came to the United States from Korea in 1969 when he was a sophomore in high school. In 1973 upon graduation Cho received a full two-year scholarship to the American Academy of Art in Chicago. Two days short of graduation Cho left school and never considered any more formal education. Kang Cho then moved to Denver to study with noted artist Bill Sharer who taught Cho about outdoor painting and color techniques.
