He taught at the Dayton Art Institute from 1966 to 1968 and was artist in residence at the University of Kentucky in 1972. He was an Abstract Expressionist painter and had his first exhibition in New York at the New Gallery in 1951 with artist Joan Mitchell. In 1954, he accompanied his wife, Gabrielle Staub, a correspondent for Life magazine to Paris, France, where he became part of a group of expatriate American artists which included Sam Francis and Joan Mitchell.
