Conceived in response to the tragically high death toll amongst Gaza's children during violent military assaults in January 2009, Against the Wall critically utilizes Palestine's pop-icon Handala, Naji al-Ali's (1936-1987) much-loved cartoon character. A refugee from Ash Shajara, one of the hundreds of villages destroyed during the 1948 Nakhba, and a fervent activist for the right to return, Naji al-Ali drew acerbic political cartoons criticizing US, Arab and Israeli policies alike.
