Leo Fellinger was born in 1884 in Graz. Fellinger attended the regional high school of Graz, sponsored by the painter Carl O'Lynch of Town and Oswald Stieger. In 1903, he became a pupil of the painting school of Anton Ažbe in Munich. He also studied from 1905 at the academy in Munich with Gabriel von Hackl, Max Mayershofer and Fritz Hass, while at the same time studying anatomy at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich.
