Born in Savoy, Italy, Leonardo Barbieri studied art in Lyon, France and then went to Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1844. By 1847, he was in San Francisco and began painting portraits of prominent Californians including members of the Constitutional Convention of 1849. In 1850, he went to Monterey and then to Santa Barbara where local citizens commissioned him to paint Father Rubio at the mission. Born in Savoy, Italy, Leonardo Barbieri studied art in Lyon, France and then went to Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1844. By 1847, he was in San Francisco and began painting portraits of prominent Californians including members of the Constitutional Convention of 1849. In 1850, he went to Monterey and then to Santa Barbara where local citizens commissioned him to paint Father Rubio at the mission. He traveled in Mexico and in 1856, established an art school in Lima, Peru. Later he became director of the Colegio Nacional de Nuestra Senora Guadalupe.
