Mehus embodied the late Baroque spirit and figurative arts with his art tending towards dreamlike deformation of characters and violent luminosity. He was one of the most important followers of Cortona as regards sacred paintings. Mehus lived a restless life, moving to Lucca, Genoa, Milan, and Venice, where he was able to come into contact with the paintings of Titian and Tintoretto.
