Lorna Brown Napanangka was born in 1961 at the famous Indigenous artist community in Papunyadd. Papunya is known as the birthplace of the desert art movement initiated by Geoffrey Bardon in 1971, who was a schoolteacher in Papunya. Lorna's father is the well-respected artist Timmy Payungka Tjapangati, one of the first generation Papunya artists. Papunya is known as the birthplace of the desert art movement initiated by Geoffrey Bardon in 1971, who was a schoolteacher in Papunya. Lorna's father is the well-respected artist Timmy Payungka Tjapangati, one of the first generation Papunya artists. Lorna herself started to be recognised as a talented artist following her participation in the collaborative artwork "Kiwirrkurra Women's Painting" for the Western Desert Dialysis Appeal in 1999. Lorna has since exhibited in Australia and overseas and was a finalist in the prestigious 2002 Telstra Art Prize.
