The German painter and illustrator Ludwig Dettman was born in 1865 in Flensburg. He studied at the Berlin Art Academy and worked in his early career as an illustrator. Influenced by Max Liebermann, Dettman focused on landscape painting and was one of the founding members of the Berlin Secession in 1898. In 1900, he became the director of the Academy of Königsberg. During the First World War, Dettmann was official war painter; afterwards he lived and worked in Berlin, where he died in 1944. (msc)... Read full biography
