From 1871 to 1874, he attended the private art school operated by Knud Bergslien and Morten Müller, who had a great influence on his style. At the age of fifteen, he went to Oslo to attend the Royal Drawing School. From 1871 to 1874, he attended the private art school operated by Knud Bergslien and Morten Müller, who had a great influence on his style. After 1874, he went to Düsseldorf, where he attended the private school of Sophus Jacobsen, a fellow Norwegian. In 1875, he took a study trip along the Rhine, then returned to Norway.
