He studied architecture at Witwatersrand University, Johannesburg, from 1946-1948 and he was also painting in his spare time. Manolis Calliyannis first personal exhibition was organised at the Constantia Galleries, Johannesburg, in 1948 and moved the same year to Paris, where he became a full-time painter. He first made his reputation with abstract paintings in restrained and sober colors.
