She was the daughter of prominent parents in San Angelo and showed little interest in art as a child. She graduated from San Angelo High School and then attended a finishing school. In 1907, just out of school, she married Clifton Tupper, a founder of the San Angelo Evening Standard newspaper. Four years later they moved to Waco, Texas, and in 1912, they moved again, this time to San Antonio where they lived for 25 years until his death in 1938.
