Birshtein was known for his portraits, landscapes, still-life, and genre-painting, particularly those depicting the Russian North. He won several awards throughout his career, including the Prize of All-Union Concourse by the USSR Artists’ Association “My Contemporary” in 1972 and the Golden Medal of the Russia Art Academy in 1990....
