He attended private art school in Vienna with Heinrich Strehblow, and from 1897-1900, he attended the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. From 1900 to 1904, he studied at the Munich Art Academy. From 1909 to 1910 he was an employee of the magazine The Hair Dryer, then until 1913 he was cartoonist at Ludwig von Ficker's magazine The Burner. In 1914 he was a soldier in World War I, and fell into Russian captivity, from which he was released in the 1920s.
