Huang was as popular as Qi Baishi, an influential Chinese painter noted for the whimsical and playful style of his ink painting works. The two were dubbed “Northern Qi and Southern Huang”, a reflection of their unparalleled status in modern art. Zeng was considered an inheritor of Huang. His paintings switched between realism and abstraction and were characterized by heavier ink and majestic momentum. He usually splashes and soaks ink on paper to create different visual effects.
