Mieczyslaw Filipkiewicz was born in 1891 in Krakow. He was the brother of the painter Stefan Filipkiewicz. In the years 1910-1915 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków with Stanislaw Debicki, Józef Pankiewicz and Teodor Axentowicz. Then he worked as a technical draftsman in the construction of a narrow-gauge railway in the territory of the former Kingdom of Poland and completed his education in Vienna.
