He is credited with the first illustrated article about Monhegan Island, and did numerous pen and ink drawings of that place, which appeared in Harper's magazine. He was born in Mt. Gilead, Ohio. He became a student of John George Brown in New York, and his career as a marine painter began when he accompanied William Bradford on an arctic expedition in 1869.
