Born in Padang Panjang, Indonesia, Mochtar Apin was a painter, print maker and graphic artist, a member of the Bandung School and a founding member of the progressive art movement Gelanggang Seniman Muda (Arena of Independant Artists) in Jakarta in 1946, promoting modernity and freedom in art and culture. He studied under Ries Mulder in Bandung, in the Netherlands and in Paris. He had numerous exhibitions worldwide including retrospectives in 1989/1990 and more recently at the National University of Singapore Museum in 2013. He is regularly represented at international auctions.
