Nicolas Tarkhoff, the son of a wealthy merchant, was rejected by the academy in Moscow because of his revolutionary ideas. As a young man, he was part of the Muscovite artistic circles before he went to Paris around the turn of the century after several journeys. He was student at the Académie Julian and later he attended the Academy of Fine Arts. His way of painting is influenced by van Gogh, Cézanne und Pissarro and characterized by expressive brushstrokes and bright colors. Tarkhoff is regarded as a Post-Impressionist. His oeuvre is represented by Paris street scenes, still lifes, animal paintings and by the landscapes of the surroundings of Orsay where he settled down with his family in 1911.
