Nick Cardy was born Nick "Viscardi" on October 16, 1920 in New York City, NY on the lower east side of Manhattan. His parents were first generation immigrants from Italy, who did not speak English. Nick Cardy was born Nick "Viscardi" on October 16, 1920 in New York City, NY on the lower east side of Manhattan. His parents were first generation immigrants from Italy, who did not speak English. After becoming interested in drawing at the early age of six years old, his first formal art training began in his teen years at the local Boy's Club, which offered free art classes. Nick's first published work was at fourteen years of age in the then New York Herald newspaper and Literary Digest magazine as a contest winner.
